About the Newfoundland and Labrador General Knowledge test

In Newfoundland and Labrador, Service NL sets this test, written by every Newfoundland and Labrador commercial applicant whatever class they are working toward. The questions below come from the commercial driver's manual that applies in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The general knowledge test is a multiple-choice exam administered by your provincial licensing authority, and it is the prerequisite you clear before any class-specific or endorsement testing. It checks that you understand the rules of the road as they apply to large, heavy, slower vehicles: right-of-way at intersections and merges, safe turning and passing, lane use, speed management, and following distance.

You also have to recognize the signs a professional driver relies on every shift, regulatory, warning, construction, and information signs, by their shape and colour before the words are even legible. Questions are written so a car driver's habits are not always the right answer, because the size, length, and weight of a commercial vehicle change how each rule plays out.
