About the Canadian commercial driver licence test
The Class 1 commercial knowledge test qualifies you to drive tractor-trailer combinations across Canada. Federal rules govern Hours-of-Service, air-brake systems, and cargo securement; provinces add their own knowledge test, road test, and (in most provinces) a Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) program.
Test format and pass mark vary: Ontario's MELT-aligned test, BC's ICBC commercial knowledge test, Quebec's SAAQ Class 1, each has its own structure, but all cover the same core federal commercial rules. Drive IQ Canada matches each province's test format exactly.
Most provinces require you to hold a full Class 5 (passenger) licence, complete MELT training (where required), pass the Class 1 knowledge test, and pass a road test in a tractor-trailer. Some provinces have a medical exam requirement and minimum age (usually 18 or 19).
