About the Canadian commercial driver licence test

The Class 1 commercial knowledge test qualifies you to drive tractor-trailer combinations across Canada. Federal rules govern Hours-of-Service, air-brake systems, and cargo securement; provinces add their own knowledge test, road test, and (in most provinces) a Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) program.

Test format and pass mark vary: Ontario's MELT-aligned test, BC's ICBC commercial knowledge test, Quebec's SAAQ Class 1 — each has its own structure, but all cover the same core federal commercial rules. Drive IQ Canada matches each province's test format exactly.

Most provinces require you to hold a full Class 5 (passenger) licence, complete MELT training (where required), pass the Class 1 knowledge test, and pass a road test in a tractor-trailer. Some provinces have a medical exam requirement and minimum age (usually 18 or 19).
