Canadian road signs guide
Master all Canadian road signs, regulatory, warning, construction, school, guide and service, from the Transportation Association of Canada's MUTCDC standard.
Canada uses the MUTCDC (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada), a national standard published by the Transportation Association of Canada. Every province adopts it with a few local variants. We catalog the 293 signs you'll see on Canadian provincial knowledge tests.

How road signs are tested
Provincial knowledge tests use signs in three ways: matching a sign to its meaning, identifying the correct driver action, and recognizing signs from shape and color alone (without text).
Drive IQ practice tests draw from each province's official handbook so the questions match what you'll see at the test centre, including bilingual signs in NB and ARRÊT in Quebec.
The most-tested categories are regulatory (Stop, Yield, speed limits) and warning (curves, intersections, school zones). Master these first.
Sign shapes & colors
Shape and color tell you a sign's category before you read the text. Memorise these patterns: you'll often glimpse a sign at speed and have to react in seconds.
Octagon (red)
Stop. Always means a complete stop.
Inverted triangle (red/white)
Yield. Slow and give right-of-way.
Diamond (yellow)
Warning. A hazard is ahead.
Diamond (orange)
Construction or temporary condition.
Circle (red with slash)
Prohibition. Something is not allowed.
Rectangle (white)
Regulatory. A rule applies.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a yield sign and a stop sign?
A stop sign requires a complete stop, even if there's no cross traffic. A yield sign only requires you to slow down and stop only if needed to give right-of-way to other vehicles or pedestrians.
Are road signs the same in Quebec?
Mostly yes: the shapes, colors, and meanings are identical. The difference is wording: Quebec uses ARRÊT instead of STOP. New Brunswick (officially bilingual) uses both. Symbols are unchanged province to province.
What does an orange sign mean?
Orange signs indicate construction, road work, or temporary traffic conditions. Speed limits in these zones are usually reduced and traffic fines are typically doubled.
Do I need to memorize every road sign for the knowledge test?
Not every variant: but you should recognize the categories (regulatory, warning, construction, school, guide) by shape and color, plus the most common signs in each category. Drive IQ practice tests focus on the signs each province actually tests.
