About the Alberta Air Brake test

Air brakes work on the opposite principle from the hydraulic brakes on a car. Air pressure holds the spring-loaded brakes off, so if the system loses air the springs apply the brakes automatically: the design fails safe. Because nearly every heavy commercial vehicle uses air brakes, this qualification is essential in practice, even though it appears as a separate result on your licence.

The knowledge test covers governor cut-in and cut-out pressure (typically about 100 to 125 psi), the low-air warning threshold (around 55 to 60 psi), the pressure at which the spring brakes apply (around 20 to 45 psi), slack-adjuster inspection, and the daily leak-down test. Most provinces require both a written test and a hands-on practical demonstration.
