About the Alberta Tractor-Trailer test

The tractor-trailer class is the top commercial licence, Class 1 in most provinces and Class A in Ontario, and it authorizes any combination of a power unit and a towed trailer, including semi-trailers. On top of general knowledge it tests the skills unique to combinations: coupling and uncoupling, fifth-wheel and kingpin operation, off-tracking, trailer sway, and jackknife prevention.

Most provinces now gate this class behind Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT), for example Ontario's minimum 103.5 hours and Quebec's 615-hour PESR program. The knowledge component also covers combination weights and dimensions, load securement, and the federal Hours-of-Service rules that apply to long-haul work.
