Everything to know about the ICBC Class 7 written test
British Columbia's knowledge test is administered by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) at any ICBC driver-licensing office. The test has 50 multiple-choice questions and you need at least 80% (40 of 50) to pass. There's no formal time limit — most drivers finish in under 30 minutes.
BC's GDL programme has three stages. Passing the knowledge test gets you a Class 5L (Learner) licence. After holding the L for at least 12 months and passing a road test, you advance to Class 5N (Novice). Two more years of N driving with no prohibitions earns you your full Class 5 licence — so the full GDL cycle is at least three years.
Learner-stage rules in BC are some of the strictest in Canada: zero BAC, only one passenger (must be a supervisor with a valid Class 5 licence and at least three years experience), no driving between midnight and 5 AM, and no electronic devices at all. Novice drivers can have only one non-family passenger and still face zero BAC.
The test is computer-based at ICBC offices. It's offered in English, but interpreters are allowed if arranged in advance. You can take the test in many languages on request, and the Learn to Drive Smart manual is published in multiple languages on the ICBC website. The test includes road signs, rules of the road, and BC-specific topics like sharing the road with cyclists.
BC has some unique rules. Winter tires (3-Peak Mountain Snowflake, or M+S with adequate tread) are required on most highways from October 1 to April 30 — this is enforced with fines and has been deadly serious since the 2014 changes. BC also requires drivers to slow to 70 km/h (or 40 km/h in 80-zones) when passing roadside-stopped emergency vehicles or tow trucks displaying flashing lights.
Brushing up on Canadian road signs? Our sign-specific practice covers every regulatory, warning, and information sign you'll see on the test.
