Everything to know about the Newfoundland and Labrador Class 5 Knowledge Test
Newfoundland and Labrador's knowledge test is administered by the Motor Registration Division (MRD) at Service NL centres throughout the province. Like Nova Scotia, the test is split into two 20-question sections, one on signs, one on rules of the road. You must score at least 17 of 20 (85%) on each section independently to pass; failing one means failing the whole test.
The 85% pass mark is one of the highest in Canada. Most provinces use 80%. Combined with the two-section structure, this makes the NL test among the harder written tests in the country. There's no time limit, and the test is computer-based.
NL's GDL has three stages: Class 5 Level I (Learner), Level II (Novice), Class 5 (full). Level I requires a fully-licensed supervisor in the front seat, zero BAC, and no driving from midnight to 5 AM. After 12 months on Level I (or 8 months with an approved driver-education course) and a passing road test, you advance to Level II for at least another 12 months.
Level II drivers can drive unsupervised but maintain zero BAC, can have only one passenger from midnight to 5 AM, and must display the green Level II decal on their vehicle. After successful completion of Level II, you become a fully-licensed Class 5 driver, typically 24+ months from the original Level I date.
The handbook gives heavy weight to the province's unique driving conditions: extensive coastal cliffs, rapidly changing fog and storm patterns from the North Atlantic, frequent caribou and moose presence on rural highways (some of Canada's worst moose-collision rates), and the long, isolated drives across Labrador. Winter on the island can include freezing rain, blizzards, and ice, sometimes within the same day.
Brushing up on Canadian road signs? Our sign-specific practice covers every regulatory, warning, and information sign you'll see on the test.
