Everything to know about the Newfoundland and Labrador Class 6 Knowledge Test
Newfoundland and Labrador's motorcycle knowledge test is the first step toward a Newfoundland and Labrador Class 6 licence. It covers motorcycle-specific operating rules, traffic laws, and safety considerations, and it's administered by Motor Registration Division (MRD). Newfoundland and Labrador does not publish a pass mark or the number of questions for this test. No time limit is published.
Motorcycle riders face a different risk profile than drivers of enclosed vehicles, and the test reflects that. Expect questions on lane positioning, scanning well ahead and behind, and how to handle road hazards that matter far less in a car: gravel patches, painted lines in rain, oily intersection centres, and metal grates.
The handbook covers protective gear in detail: long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots and full-finger gloves are recommended on every ride.
A pre-ride check of tires, brakes, lights, chain and fluid levels is basic safety on any motorcycle, especially after winter storage.
Brushing up on Canadian road signs? Our sign-specific practice covers every regulatory, warning, and information sign you'll see on the test.
Newfoundland and Labrador: rules to know
Newfoundland and Labrador issues motorcycle privileges under Class 6, and its learner stage is Class 6 Level I. At Level I you may never carry a passenger, must be accompanied by a driver with four years' experience as a full Class 6 driver (on another motorcycle or in a vehicle), must keep a zero blood alcohol concentration (your accompanying driver too), may not ride from a half-hour before sunset to a half-hour after sunrise, and may not ride on highways where the limit is over 80 km/h. Before the learner's licence is issued you must pass a motorcycle balance test (waived with proof of a completed motorcycle training course), a written test and a vision test; the road test in traffic follows after the required time at Level I.
