Everything to know about the Class 7 written test
Yukon's Class 7 knowledge test is administered by the Motor Vehicles branch of the Department of Highways and Public Works. The test is split into two 20-question sections (signs and rules of the road), and you need at least 16 of 20 (80%) on each section to pass. Most testing is done at the Whitehorse Motor Vehicles office, with limited testing at smaller community offices.
Yukon's GDL is similar to NWT's: Class 7 (Learner) → Class 5G (Graduated) → full Class 5. Class 7 requires a fully-licensed supervisor in the front seat, zero BAC, and night driving restrictions. Class 5G allows unsupervised driving with continued 0.00 BAC for at least 24 months before becoming eligible for the full Class 5.
The Yukon's handbook addresses driving in extreme cold and isolated stretches. The Alaska Highway, the Klondike Highway, and Robert Campbell Highway can all have hundreds of kilometres between fuel stops or communities, especially in winter. The handbook treats trip-planning, fuel management, and emergency-kit contents as core safety topics.
Yukon roads are mostly two-lane and rural, with significant gravel sections — particularly heading north toward Dawson City and beyond. The handbook covers specific techniques for gravel-road driving (avoiding sudden steering inputs, increased following distance for the dust cloud, hazards from oncoming truck spray) that aren't emphasized in southern province manuals.
Wildlife is a major focus. Bison, caribou, moose, bears, and Dall sheep all use roadways at various times of year. Dawn and dusk are particularly dangerous. The handbook provides species-specific avoidance techniques and explains why running over a smaller animal (like a fox) is sometimes safer than swerving and risking a collision with something larger.
Brushing up on Canadian road signs? Our sign-specific practice covers every regulatory, warning, and information sign you'll see on the test.
