Everything to know about the British Columbia ICBC Class 6 Knowledge Test
British Columbia's motorcycle knowledge test is the first step toward an ICBC Class 6 licence. It covers motorcycle-specific operating rules, traffic laws, and safety considerations, and it's administered by Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC). ICBC does not publish a pass mark or the number of questions for this test. No time limit is published.
Motorcycle riders face a different risk profile than drivers of enclosed vehicles, and the test reflects that. Expect questions on lane positioning, scanning well ahead and behind, and how to handle road hazards that matter far less in a car: gravel patches, painted lines in rain, oily intersection centres, and metal grates.
In B.C. all riders and their passengers must wear approved motorcycle safety helmets; ICBC tells you to look for a DOT, Snell M2005 or M2010, or ECE label. People of the Sikh religion with unshorn hair who wear full turbans are exempt. The handbook covers protective gear in detail: long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots and full-finger gloves are recommended on every ride.
Lane splitting, riding between lanes of traffic, is illegal in B.C.

British Columbia: rules to know
B.C. has two routes to a Class 6. New drivers enter the Graduated Licensing Program on a Class 8L learner's licence: a supervisor aged 25 or older with a full Class 6 and a 60 km/h limit until you pass the motorcycle skills test (after at least 30 days), plus no passengers, daylight riding only, zero alcohol and drugs, no electronic devices and an L sign. After 12 months you take the Class 8 road test for a Class 8N novice licence, then hold it for 24 consecutive months without a driving prohibition before the Class 6 road test. Drivers who already hold Class 1 to 5 get a Class 6L instead (supervisor aged 19 or older) and can take the Class 6 road test after 30 days and a passed skills test. Lane splitting is illegal in B.C.
