Everything to know about the New Brunswick Class 7 Knowledge Test
New Brunswick's knowledge test is administered by Service New Brunswick (SNB) at any of its service centres. The test has 40 multiple-choice questions split between signs and rules of the road; you need at least 80% (32 of 40) overall to pass. There's no time limit, and the test is offered in both English and French. New Brunswick is Canada's only officially bilingual province.
After passing, you receive a Class 7 Stage 1 (Learner) licence. The province uses a two-stage GDL: Stage 1 lasts at least 12 months, then Stage 2 (Intermediate) lasts at least 12 more months. Once both stages are complete and you've passed both road tests, you become a fully-licensed Class 5 driver.
Stage 1 holders must drive with a fully-licensed Class 5 supervisor in the front seat, must have a 0.00 BAC, and cannot drive between midnight and 5 AM. Stage 2 lifts the supervisor requirement but keeps the zero BAC and adds a passenger limit equal to the number of seatbelts. New Brunswick is also strict on phone use: no handheld devices for Stage 1 or 2 drivers under any circumstances.
New Brunswick's bilingual nature means signs throughout the province often display both English and French (some are entirely French in francophone areas like the Acadian Peninsula). The driver's handbook is published in parallel English and French editions, and the test reflects this. You can take the entire test in your preferred official language.
The province has unique geography to consider in the test content: extensive coastal driving along the Bay of Fundy (fog, sudden weather), river crossings in Saint John and Miramichi, and long rural stretches connecting Acadian fishing villages. Wildlife collisions, particularly with deer and moose, are a major covered topic.
