Everything to know about the Class 7 written test

Prince Edward Island's knowledge test is administered by Access PEI, the provincial service centre network. The test has 40 multiple-choice questions covering signs and rules of the road; you need at least 80% (32 of 40) to pass. There's no formal time limit. The test is given on a computer at any of the province's Access PEI locations.

PEI's GDL has three stages: Class 7 Instruction Permit (Learner) → Class 5 Probationary → full Class 5. The Instruction Permit must be held for at least 12 months (or 9 months with an approved driver-education course) before you can take the road test for the Probationary licence. Probationary lasts at least another 18 months before becoming eligible for full licensing.

Instruction Permit holders need a fully-licensed Class 5 supervisor (4+ years experience) in the front seat at all times, a 0.00 BAC, and no driving between midnight and 5 AM. Probationary drivers can drive unsupervised but maintain zero BAC and a midnight-to-5-AM passenger restriction unless travelling for work or school.

PEI is Canada's smallest province by both population and area, but the rules of the road are the same as larger jurisdictions. The handbook covers all standard topics with extra emphasis on Confederation Bridge driving (the 12.9-km link to New Brunswick has specific wind-speed restrictions and is closed periodically), summer-tourist conditions, and the unique mix of farm equipment and tourist traffic on Island roads.

Distracted-driving rules in PEI are strict: a $575 to $1,275 fine and 5 demerit points for first offence — among the highest in Canada. PEI also has a strong commitment to road safety education in schools, and the youth GDL completion rate is among the country's best.
