Everything to know about the Class 7 written test

Nova Scotia's knowledge test is administered by the Registry of Motor Vehicles, part of Service Nova Scotia. The test is split into two 20-question sections — one on road signs and one on rules of the road. You must score at least 80% (16 of 20) on each section independently to pass; failing one means you fail the whole test.

There's no time limit, and the test is administered at any Access Nova Scotia centre. You take the test on a computer, and most people complete it in well under an hour. The current handbook is available online at novascotia.ca and includes specific guidance on Atlantic-Canada conditions like coastal weather and rural roads.

After passing, you receive a Class 7 Beginner's Licence. The provincial GDL is two-stage: Beginner (at least 12 months, with mandatory driving course or 18 months without), then Newly-Licensed Driver (24 months) before becoming a fully-licensed Class 5 driver. The Newly-Licensed stage allows unsupervised driving but maintains zero-tolerance BAC and a midnight-to-5-AM passenger restriction.

Nova Scotia is one of two provinces (with Newfoundland) that splits the knowledge test into two separately-graded sections. This setup means you can't compensate for weak performance on signs by acing the rules section, or vice versa — both must clear the bar independently. Most candidates spend extra study time on whichever section they find harder.

The province uses a standard 12-point demerit-system, with consequences ranging from interview at 6 points to suspension at 12. Distracted-driving fines are aggressive: a first offence carries a $237 fine and 4 demerits. Nova Scotia also enforces the Move Over Law, requiring drivers to slow and shift away from emergency vehicles displaying flashing lights.
