Everything to know about the Nova Scotia Class 6 Knowledge Test

Nova Scotia's motorcycle knowledge test is the first step toward a Nova Scotia Class 6 licence. It covers motorcycle-specific operating rules, traffic laws, and safety considerations, and it's administered by Registry of Motor Vehicles, Service Nova Scotia. 20 questions. You need 16 correct (80%) to pass. No time limit is published.

Motorcycle riders face a different risk profile than drivers of enclosed vehicles, and the test reflects that. Expect questions on lane positioning, scanning well ahead and behind, and how to handle road hazards that matter far less in a car: gravel patches, painted lines in rain, oily intersection centres, and metal grates.

Riders and passengers must wear approved helmets meeting a CSA, Snell, US FMVSS 218 (DOT), ANSI Z90.1 or British Standards Institute standard. The handbook covers protective gear in detail: long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots and full-finger gloves are recommended on every ride.

A pre-ride check of tires, brakes, lights, chain and fluid levels is basic safety on any motorcycle, especially after winter storage.

Brushing up on Canadian road signs? Our sign-specific practice covers every regulatory, warning, and information sign you'll see on the test.

Nova Scotia: rules to know

Nova Scotia's motorcycle learner stage is Class LM, followed by the newly licensed Class 6N. Class LM learners must keep a zero blood-alcohol level, carry no passengers, and ride only from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. At Class 6N the blood-alcohol level stays at zero, and you may not ride between midnight and 5 a.m. without a written exemption. A driver who already holds a Class 1 to 5 licence can add a motorcycle endorsement instead: D for motorcycles of 100 cc or less, A for any motorcycle. Riders and passengers must wear a helmet meeting a CSA, Snell, US FMVSS 218 (DOT), ANSI Z90.1 or British Standards Institute standard.
