Everything to know about the Nunavut Class 7 Knowledge Exam
Nunavut's Class 7 knowledge test is administered by the Motor Vehicles division of the Department of Community and Government Services. The test is split into two 20-question sections (signs and rules), with a passing requirement of at least 16 of 20 (80%) on each section. Testing is offered in Iqaluit, Cambridge Bay, Rankin Inlet, and several other communities, though not all communities have year-round testing availability.
Nunavut is unique in Canada in that none of its communities are connected to each other (or to the rest of Canada) by road. Driving is primarily local, within the road network of a single town or hamlet, supplemented by ice-road travel between certain communities in winter. There are no provincial highways in the conventional sense.
The GDL system has two stages: Class 7 (Learner) and Class 5G (Graduated). Class 7 requires a supervisor with a full Class 5 licence, 0.00 BAC, and adherence to community road-rules (which may include restrictions specific to local conditions). Class 5G is held for at least 24 months before becoming a full Class 5 licence.
The Nunavut handbook addresses driving conditions found nowhere else in Canada in such an extreme form: complete winter darkness for weeks at high latitudes, blizzards that can reduce visibility to under one metre, narrow gravel community roads shared with snow machines and ATVs in summer, and wildlife including muskoxen, caribou, polar bears (in coastal communities), and arctic foxes.
The handbook is published in English and Inuktitut, with French and other languages available on request at testing centres. Iqaluit and Rankin Inlet have the most reliable testing schedules; smaller communities may have testing only when an issuing officer visits, which can be a few times per year. Always confirm in advance.
