Everything to know about the Class 7 written test

The Northwest Territories' Class 7 knowledge test is administered by the Department of Infrastructure (formerly MACA — Municipal and Community Affairs) at issuing offices across the territory. The test is split into two 20-question sections covering signs and rules, and you need at least 16 of 20 (80%) on each section independently to pass.

The NWT covers an enormous geographic area with very few licensing offices — Yellowknife, Inuvik, Hay River, Fort Smith, and a handful of smaller communities. Test availability and language options vary; English is universal, French and Indigenous-language accommodations are available in some locations.

NWT's GDL has two main stages: Class 7 (Learner) and Class 5G (Graduated), then full Class 5. Class 7 holders must drive with a supervisor, hold a 0.00 BAC, and observe nighttime restrictions. Class 5G allows unsupervised driving but maintains 0.00 BAC and is held for a minimum of 24 months before becoming a fully-licensed Class 5 driver.

The NWT handbook devotes significant space to driving conditions found nowhere else in Canada: ice roads (winter-only routes across frozen rivers and lakes, including the famous Tibbitt-to-Contwoyto route servicing diamond mines), permafrost-heave damage to road surfaces, and the genuine consequences of being stranded in winter (-40°C temperatures and dozens of kilometres between communities). Survival kits in your vehicle are not just recommended — in many cases they're life-saving.

Wildlife is a constant consideration: bison on Highway 1, caribou crossings, and bears at scenic stops. The handbook also covers behaviour around heavy mining and resource-extraction trucks, which dominate certain corridors.

Brushing up on Canadian road signs? Our sign-specific practice covers every regulatory, warning, and information sign you'll see on the test.
