Everything to know about the Manitoba MPI Class 5 Knowledge Test
Manitoba's knowledge test is administered by Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI), the Crown corporation that also handles vehicle insurance in the province. The test has 30 multiple-choice questions and requires at least 25 correct (about 83%) to pass. It's offered at MPI service centres across the province.
MPI uses a Driver Safety Rating (DSR) scale instead of a demerit-point system. The DSR runs from -20 (worst) to +15 (best). Each year of clean driving moves you up one level; each conviction moves you down a different number of levels depending on severity. Your DSR directly affects your insurance premium: higher rating, lower premium.
After passing the knowledge test you receive a Class 5L (Learner) licence. Manitoba's GDL has three stages: Learner, Authorized (after 9 months and a basic road test), and Full Class 5 (after at least 15 more months on Authorized). Authorized drivers can drive unsupervised but face zero BAC, a passenger limit equal to the number of seatbelts, and a midnight-to-5-AM restriction unless going to or from work.
The Manitoba test focuses heavily on winter driving. The province experiences some of Canada's most severe winter conditions, with temperatures regularly dropping below -35°C and frequent blowing-snow conditions on the prairies. The handbook covers specific advice for ice, blizzards, and dealing with the province's vast empty stretches.
Manitoba also has a robust Class 6 motorcycle programme and dedicated Class 1 commercial training (the province has a strong trucking industry). The Province operates one of Canada's largest publicly-funded driver-education programs, MPI Driver-Z, which is mandatory for anyone under 19 seeking a learner's licence.
