Everything to know about the Saskatchewan SGI Class 7 Knowledge Test

Saskatchewan's knowledge test is administered by Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), the same Crown corporation that handles the province's vehicle insurance. The test has 40 multiple-choice questions and requires at least 80% (32 of 40) to pass. It's available at any SGI motor licence issuer in the province.

SGI uses a single-stage knowledge test that covers both road signs and rules of the road in one sitting. Once you pass, you receive a Class 7L (Learner) licence. After at least nine months of supervised driving and passing a basic road test, you advance to Class 7N (Novice). Six more months on the N stage and a passing advanced road test grants you the full Class 5.

Saskatchewan's GDL is one of the shorter cycles in Canada. Total time from learner to full licence is around 18 months, compared to BC's three years or Quebec's two-plus probationary stage. The province does require any driver under 19 to complete a high-school driver-education course before becoming a learner, however.

SGI uses a Safe Driver Recognition (SDR) programme rather than a traditional demerit-point system. You earn points for each year of safe driving, and you lose points for moving violations. Lose enough points and you face suspensions and increased insurance costs. The system is designed to reward long-term safe driving rather than just punish individual violations.

The test covers Saskatchewan-specific content including farm-equipment sharing on rural roads (a common scenario), wildlife collision avoidance, and the province's strict zero-tolerance alcohol rules for new drivers and commercial operators. Saskatchewan also has playground zones (30 km/h when in effect) similar to Alberta.

Brushing up on Canadian road signs? Our sign-specific practice covers every regulatory, warning, and information sign you'll see on the test.
