WHAT YOU SIT

Saskatchewan sets 3 written exams

  • 1Basic knowledge · 80% to pass · from the car handbook
  • 2Signs · 80% to pass · from the car handbook
  • 3Motorcycle knowledge · 80% to pass

Two of the three exams come from the Saskatchewan Driver's Handbook rather than the motorcycle handbook, so general road rules and signs count toward your result.

Everything to know about the Saskatchewan SGI Class 6 Knowledge Test

Saskatchewan's motorcycle knowledge test is the first step toward a motorcycle endorsement under SGI's Motorcycle Graduated Driver Licensing (MGDL) program. It covers motorcycle-specific operating rules, traffic laws, and safety considerations, and it's administered by Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI). Three separate exams, basic knowledge, signs and motorcycle knowledge, each graded at 80%. SGI does not publish the number of questions. No time limit is published.

Motorcycle riders face a different risk profile than drivers of enclosed vehicles, and the test reflects that. Expect questions on lane positioning, scanning well ahead and behind, and how to handle road hazards that matter far less in a car: gravel patches, painted lines in rain, oily intersection centres, and metal grates.

Saskatchewan law requires riders and passengers to wear approved, properly fastened helmets meeting at least one of these standards: ANSI, British Standards Institution, CSA, DOT (FMVSS 218), Snell or ECE 22.05. Riders in the MGDL program must wear a three-quarter, modular or full-face helmet. The handbook covers protective gear in detail: long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots and full-finger gloves are recommended on every ride.

A pre-ride check of tires, brakes, lights, chain and fluid levels is basic safety on any motorcycle, especially after winter storage.

Saskatchewan: rules to know

In Saskatchewan, motorcycle licensing runs through SGI's Motorcycle Graduated Driver Licensing (MGDL) program, and you need a Class 5 or higher licence before you start. The learner endorsement takes four tests: a basic knowledge exam and a signs exam (both from the Saskatchewan Driver's Handbook), a motorcycle knowledge exam and a vision test, with each written exam graded at 80 percent, then SGI-approved training or a basic ability road test passed within three tries. Learners may not carry passengers, tow, or ride from half an hour before sunset to half an hour after sunrise, and must display a red L placard; every MGDL stage has zero tolerance for alcohol and drugs. An experienced driver who registers a blood alcohol content over 0.04 faces a roadside licence suspension; over 0.08 is a Criminal Code offence.
