WHAT YOU SIT
One written exam
- Learner class 6 motorcycle written exam
You take the motorcycle exam to reach the learner stage. Moving up to Novice also needs a Class 7 licence held for six months, so starting without a car licence means two written exams overall.

Everything to know about the Yukon Class 6 Knowledge Exam
Yukon's motorcycle knowledge test is the first step toward a Yukon Class 6 licence. It covers motorcycle-specific operating rules, traffic laws, and safety considerations, and it's administered by Motor Vehicles, Department of Highways and Public Works. Yukon does not publish a pass mark or the number of questions for this test. No time limit is published.
Motorcycle riders face a different risk profile than drivers of enclosed vehicles, and the test reflects that. Expect questions on lane positioning, scanning well ahead and behind, and how to handle road hazards that matter far less in a car: gravel patches, painted lines in rain, oily intersection centres, and metal grates.
In Yukon all riders and their passengers must wear approved motorcycle safety helmets; the handbook tells you to look for a DOT, Snell M2005 or M2010, or ECE label. The handbook covers protective gear in detail: long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots and full-finger gloves are recommended on every ride.
A pre-ride check of tires, brakes, lights, chain and fluid levels is basic safety on any motorcycle, especially after winter storage.

Yukon: rules to know
In Yukon the law requires a motorcycle's headlight to be on at all times while riding. Demerit-point suspensions start at 15 or more points for a fully licensed driver, but at just 7 or more for a driver in the graduated licensing program. Yukon also advises keeping riding groups small: a group larger than six riders should be split into two or more so the lead rider can keep it manageable.
