Everything to know about the Manitoba MPI Class 6 Knowledge Test

Manitoba's motorcycle knowledge test is the first step toward an MPI Class 6 licence. It covers motorcycle-specific operating rules, traffic laws, and safety considerations, and it's administered by Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI). MPI does not publish a pass mark or the number of questions for this test. No time limit is published.

Motorcycle riders face a different risk profile than drivers of enclosed vehicles, and the test reflects that. Expect questions on lane positioning, scanning well ahead and behind, and how to handle road hazards that matter far less in a car: gravel patches, painted lines in rain, oily intersection centres, and metal grates.

All Manitoba motorcyclists and their passengers must wear an approved helmet meeting Snell M2010 or M2015, US FMVSS 218 or ECE Regulation 22. The only exemptions are riders in a legally authorized parade and bona fide members of the Sikh religion. The handbook covers protective gear in detail: long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots and full-finger gloves are recommended on every ride.

Manitoba's handbook tells riders never to pass slower or stopped vehicles by cutting between lanes of traffic.

A pre-ride check of tires, brakes, lights, chain and fluid levels is basic safety on any motorcycle, especially after winter storage.

Manitoba: rules to know

Manitoba issues a Class 6 only to drivers who already hold a Manitoba licence of another class. Passing the Class 6 knowledge test gives you a Class 6M licence to ride only while taking an approved one-day, user-pay motorcycle training course, which every first-time rider must complete. You then hold the Class 6L learner stage for at least nine months: no passengers, no towing, no riding from half an hour before sunset to half an hour after sunrise, and no alcohol or drugs in your system. The Intermediate stage lasts at least 15 months. MPI's Driver Safety Rating scale sets your premiums: traffic convictions, at-fault claims and alcohol- or drug-related suspensions move you down it and raise what you pay. The only helmet exemptions Manitoba recognizes are for riders in a legally authorized parade and bona fide members of the Sikh religion.
