Everything to know about the Prince Edward Island Class 6 Knowledge Test

Prince Edward Island's motorcycle knowledge test is the first step toward a PEI Class 6 licence. It covers motorcycle-specific operating rules, traffic laws, and safety considerations, and it's administered by Transportation and Infrastructure, Access PEI. PEI does not publish a pass mark or the number of questions for this test. No time limit is published.

Motorcycle riders face a different risk profile than drivers of enclosed vehicles, and the test reflects that. Expect questions on lane positioning, scanning well ahead and behind, and how to handle road hazards that matter far less in a car: gravel patches, painted lines in rain, oily intersection centres, and metal grates.

PEI law requires both the rider and the passenger to wear approved helmets. The handbook covers protective gear in detail: long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots and full-finger gloves are recommended on every ride.

A pre-ride check of tires, brakes, lights, chain and fluid levels is basic safety on any motorcycle, especially after winter storage.

Brushing up on Canadian road signs? Our sign-specific practice covers every regulatory, warning, and information sign you'll see on the test.

Prince Edward Island: rules to know

Prince Edward Island issues motorcycle privileges under Class 6: minimum age 17 (with parental approval under 18), written or oral tests on this class of vehicle and a road test on a motorcycle. A driver who already holds a Class 1 to 5 licence can get a Motorcycle Instruction Permit, valid for 30 days, for daytime riding only within 30 km of home and with no passengers. Drivers in the Graduated Driver Licensing program must have zero blood alcohol, and both rider and passenger must wear approved helmets.
