Everything to know about the Québec SAAQ Class 6 Knowledge Test
Québec's motorcycle knowledge test is the first step toward a SAAQ Class 6A (all motorcycles), 6B (400 cc or less) or 6C (125 cc or less) licence. It covers motorcycle-specific operating rules, traffic laws, and safety considerations, and it's administered by Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ). Motorcycle riders face a different risk profile than drivers of enclosed vehicles, and the test reflects that. Expect questions on lane positioning, scanning well ahead and behind, and how to handle road hazards that matter far less in a car: gravel patches, painted lines in rain, oily intersection centres, and metal grates.
In Quebec a helmet is mandatory on a motorcycle, and it must meet one of six recognized standards: CSA CAN-3-D230, DOT FMVSS 218, ANSI Z90.1, Snell, British Standards Institute or ECE Regulation 22. The handbook covers protective gear in detail: long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots and full-finger gloves are recommended on every ride.
The SAAQ lists lane splitting (riding between two rows of vehicles in adjacent lanes) among prohibited manoeuvres, along with riding between the shoulder and a vehicle in your lane.
A pre-ride check of tires, brakes, lights, chain and fluid levels is basic safety on any motorcycle, especially after winter storage.

Québec: rules to know
Quebec splits the motorcycle licence by engine size: Class 6A covers all motorcycles, 6B motorcycles of 400 cc or less, and 6C motorcycles of 125 cc or less. Mopeds and motorized scooters are Class 6D, and three-wheeled motorcycles Class 6E. The knowledge test gives you a Class 6R learner's licence for the driving-school course; the closed-track test then gives a Class 6A learner's licence, held for at least 11 months, with no riding between midnight and 5 a.m. The SAAQ lists lane splitting among prohibited manoeuvres. Drivers under 22, learners and probationary licence holders must have zero alcohol.
