Exchange a foreign driver's licence in Alberta
Do you have to take a road test? It depends entirely on who issued your licence. Here is what Alberta publishes.
Alberta has the longest exchange list of the provinces we cover. From a listed country you exchange with no test. From anywhere else you take the knowledge and road tests, though Alberta's GDL Exemption Program can credit your foreign experience against the learner wait.

- Yes: only some jurisdictions (Australia, the Isle of Man, Ireland, Switzerland, UK Northern Ireland, and the US) allow a Class 6 motorcycle exchange.
If your country has an agreement
From a recognised jurisdiction, the United States or Ukraine, you exchange for an equivalent Alberta Class 5 with no knowledge or road test. A full Class 5 needs two years of proven experience; with less you are placed in graduated licensing.
If it does not
From an unlisted country you take a Class 7 knowledge test and a Class 5 road test. You are issued a Class 7 licence first, but the GDL Exemption Program can credit part or all of the graduated program based on your years of experience, so you may not have to serve the learner wait.
The things that catch people out
The exemption credits the wait, not the tests
Even with the GDL Exemption Program, an applicant from an unlisted country takes both the knowledge test and the road test. What the exemption can remove is the learner waiting period, based on documented experience.
Originals only
Alberta takes original documents, not photocopies or faxes, and any non-English document needs a translation from an Approved Document Translator.
