12months
Wait before the test

Above the ~10.5-month national norm

0avg12 months

01The rule that decides your date

12 months of waiting

  • ICBC describes at least a year of practice with a qualified supervisor before the first road test.
  • You can start at 16.
  • BC's course reduction applies to the Novice stage before the Class 5 test, not to this one.
  • No practice hours to log. The wait is the requirement, not a number of hours behind the wheel.

02What the examiner marks

ICBC rates the road test on six smart driving skills. The examiner takes you on a route and watches for these as you drive, and is not looking for perfection. This follows ICBC's own smart driving skills; it is a study guide, not the examiner's sheet.

Observation

  • Looking well ahead in your intended path and scanning at intersections.
  • Shoulder checks, mirror checks, and a full 360-degree look before you back up.

Hazard perception

  • Spotting hazards in the road environment early and responding before they become a problem.

Speed control

  • Smooth use of the gas, brakes and gears.
  • Choosing and holding a consistent, appropriate speed.

Steering

  • Smooth, accurate steering with both hands on the wheel.

Space margins

  • Keeping enough space around the car and choosing safe lane positions.
  • Stopping accurately, in the right place.

Communication

  • Correct use of turn signals, brake lights, eye contact and, when needed, the horn.

The road test takes about 35 minutes, including time at the end to go over how you did, and afterwards you get a paper copy with any areas to work on circled. ICBC does not publish a points threshold, so the goal is safe, smooth, controlled driving across all six skills, not a perfect run.

What to bring to the Class 7 road test

Everything below comes from the authority's own page, not a generic checklist.

Note: ICBC does not publish official figures for the fee, the length, the marking scheme, automatic fail conditions or what the test covers. ICBC states that knowledge and road test fees vary by which tests you are taking and lists them on icbc.com rather than in the guide. A fee is charged if you miss the appointment without 48 hours notice or a valid reason.

04The things that catch people out

You can choose the gender of your examiner

ICBC lets you request the gender of your driver examiner when you check in, or by phone beforehand. Anyone can ask and you are not required to give a reason. If ICBC cannot accommodate the request that day it will reschedule with no late-cancellation fee.

Book through ICBC, not a third-party site

ICBC states plainly that third-party booking sites are not affiliated with it, and that any site claiming to sell its road test routes did not obtain that information from ICBC.

Bring someone who can drive you home

ICBC asks you to bring a licensed driver who meets the supervisor requirements to the test itself. The reason is unsentimental: if you do not pass, you are issued a learner's licence on the spot, and a learner's licence only permits you to drive supervised. Without that person you cannot legally drive your own vehicle away.
