DRIVE IQ CANADA · ROAD TEST SERIES

VERIFIED AGAINST Yukon Motor Vehicles · AUGUST 2026

The Yukon road test

Yukon's only road test. Passing it moves you from the learner stage to the novice stage.

First: do you need this test?

Moving to Yukon with a licence from another country? You may be able to exchange it and skip this test.

6months
Wait before the test

Below the ~10.5-month national norm

01The rule that decides your date

6 months of waiting

  • That time is counted from the day you get your learner's licence, not from your first lesson.
  • You can start at 15.
  • Log 50 hours of practice. Logged practice with a valid co-driver.

02What this test covers

Yukon frames the whole test around what it calls the see-think-do skills: observation, hazard perception, speed control, space margins, steering and communication.

  • Stopping safely
  • Yielding right-of-way: giving way where the rules require it
  • Using intersections: driving through, turning right, turning left
  • Backing up: reversing in a straight line, under control
  • Entering and merging into traffic: matching speed and finding a gap
  • Simulated passing on the highway: the steps of an overtake, without another car to pass
  • Changing lanes: checking mirrors and blind spots, signalling, then moving over
  • Parking
  • Two- and three-point turns: turning the car around in a tight space

03What the examiner marks

Yukon frames the whole road test around six see-think-do driving skills, the framework it shares with British Columbia. The examiner rates these as you drive a route and perform a set of manoeuvres. It is a study guide built from those skills, not the examiner's own sheet.

Observation

  • Looking well ahead in your intended path and scanning at intersections.
  • Shoulder checks, mirror checks, and a full 360-degree look before you back up.

Hazard perception

  • Spotting hazards in the road environment early and responding before they become a problem.

Speed control

  • Smooth use of the gas, brakes and gears.
  • Choosing and holding a consistent, appropriate speed.

Steering

  • Smooth, accurate steering with both hands on the wheel.

Space margins

  • Keeping enough space around the car and choosing safe lane positions.
  • Stopping accurately, in the right place.

Communication

  • Correct use of turn signals, brake lights, eye contact and, when needed, the horn.

The examiner rates these six skills as you drive a set route and perform manoeuvres like parking, backing and turns. Yukon publishes the skills but not a points threshold, so the goal is safe, smooth driving across all six, not a perfect run.

Note: Yukon Motor Vehicles does not publish official figures for the fee, the length, the retake wait, the marking scheme or automatic fail conditions. Yukon publishes examiners' tips on common failure causes rather than a list of automatic fails.

05The things that catch people out

The examiners tell you how people fail

Yukon prints examiners' tips, which is rare. Keep to the posted limit rather than keeping up with speeding traffic. Watch school and playground zones, which it names as a common reason drivers fail. Make full stops at red lights and stop signs, in the correct position, then proceed while scanning the intersection. Shoulder check right before turning right, for cyclists and pedestrians.

Fifty logged hours before you can book

Yukon is the one jurisdiction in Canada we found that publishes a logged practice requirement: at least 50 hours with a valid co-driver during a learner stage of at least six months. Everywhere else the waiting period alone is the gate.
