01The rule that decides your date
9 months of waiting
- That time is counted from the day you get your learner's licence, not from your first lesson.
- You can start at 16.
- No practice hours to log. The wait is the requirement, not a number of hours behind the wheel.
02What the examiner marks
MPI publishes how the Class 5 road test is marked, so this follows its own breakdown: the examiner grades a set of areas as you drive and counts general errors as they add up. It is a study guide built from what MPI publishes, not the examiner's own sheet.
Vehicle condition and equipment
- Before you drive, the examiner asks you to check the vehicle's basic operating features.
Vehicle control
- Starting, stopping, steering, shifting and signalling smoothly and under control.
- Backing, parking and turning accurately.
The backing exercise
- A parallel parking exercise you have to complete. Failing it ends the test.
Rules of the road
- Following every rule of the road and driving safely throughout.
What ends the test on the spot
- Failing the parallel parking exercise
- Interfering with other road users
- A collision with another road user or an object
- A serious traffic offence or a dangerous action
- Needing the examiner to step in
- Building up 11 general errors
The examiner grades these areas as you drive and counts general errors as they add up. Eleven general errors ends the test, and so does any one of the actions above. There is no points score to chase, just safe, rule-following driving and a clean parallel park.

Note: MPI does not publish official figures for the length, the marking scheme, automatic fail conditions or what the test covers. The handbook sets out the licensing requirements and fees but does not list what the Class 5 road test covers.
04The things that catch people out
Drive dangerously and the Registrar decides when you try again
Most provinces set a fixed wait after a failure. Manitoba adds something sharper: an applicant who demonstrates dangerous driving during a road test may have to obtain permission from the Registrar of Motor Vehicles before attempting another one. The ordinary wait is 14 days.
