01The rule that decides your date
9 months of waiting
- That time is counted from the day you get your learner's licence, not from your first lesson.
- You can start at 16.
- No practice hours to log. The wait is the requirement, not a number of hours behind the wheel.
02What this test covers
SGI states the content is the same across the province.
- Starting: pulling away smoothly from a stop
- Stopping: coming to a complete, controlled stop
- Turning: left and right turns
- Traffic signs and signals
- Lane position: keeping to your lane and choosing the right one
- Travelling through controlled and uncontrolled intersections
- Backing up: reversing in a straight line, under control
- Anticipating potential hazards
- Safe driving practices such as speed selection and steering technique
- Parallel parking: parking between two vehicles at the curb
- Two-point turns: reversing into a driveway or side street to change direction

Note: SGI does not publish official figures for automatic fail conditions. SGI publishes a demerit threshold rather than a list of automatic fails.
04The things that catch people out
Driver education is compulsory here, not a discount
Several provinces let a course shorten your wait. Saskatchewan does not, because you cannot take the road test at all without a Driver Education Certificate from an SGI-certified instructor. Studying on your own means 6 hours in class and 6 in car at your own cost; the high school program is 30 hours in class and 6 in car. SGI warns that training from uncertified instructors is not recognised and will leave you unable to sit the test.
The test is conducted in English
SGI states that all road tests are conducted in English and that only the examiner and the driver may be in the vehicle. If you are not fluent, SGI recommends bringing an English speaker to help translate instructions and results before and after the test, and lists the terms you should know: right turn, left turn, backing, intersection, stop, parallel parking and two-point turns.
