01The rule that decides your date
12 months of waiting, or 8 months with a course
- That time is counted from the day you get your learner's licence, not from your first lesson.
- You can start at 16.
- No practice hours to log. The wait is the requirement, not a number of hours behind the wheel.
02What this test covers
The handbook describes the test as an examination of your actual driving skills and your ability to operate a vehicle safely while abiding by the Motor Vehicle Act.
- Stopping and starting, both on a level road and on a hill
- Changing gears in a manual vehicle, on the level and on a hill
- Making left and right turns
- Backing up: reversing in a straight line, under control
- Following distance: keeping a safe gap from the car ahead
- Giving proper signals
- Parallel and angle parking: parking at the curb and into an angled stall

Note: Service New Brunswick does not publish official figures for the fee, the length, the retake wait, the marking scheme or automatic fail conditions. The handbook publishes no minimum waiting period before a retake. It does say that a test delayed for a vehicle fault means arranging an entirely new test.
04The things that catch people out
No tricks, and nothing illegal
The handbook is blunt about what the test is not. No tricks will be played on you, and the examiner will not ask you to do anything that breaks the law. It also asks you not to talk unnecessarily during the drive, because the examiner is busy giving instructions, watching your performance and recording your score.
Bring the car you actually plan to drive
New Brunswick asks you to test in the vehicle you expect to operate once you are licensed, and you have to supply it yourself. The examiner checks it against the Motor Vehicle Act before the test starts. Defective equipment or the wrong plates do not just delay you on the day: the handbook says you then have to arrange an entirely new test.
