The Ontario G road test
Ontario's second road test, and the one that ends graduated licensing. It includes a highway component, which is what makes it different from the G2.

01The rule that decides your date
12 months of waiting
- Measured from the day you got your G2. A driver education course does not shorten this one.
- Ontario publishes a course reduction for the G2 test only. Nothing shortens the 12 months before the G test.
- No practice hours to log. The wait is the requirement, not a number of hours behind the wheel.

03What the examiner marks
DriveTest does not publish its official marking sheet, so this is our plain-language guide to what a G examiner is watching, grouped by the parts of the G road test. The G is the highway test, so most of it happens at higher speed than the G2. Treat this as a study aid, not the official form. The examiner marks a scoresheet you can ask DriveTest for after the test.
Entering the highway
- You use the on-ramp to build up to the speed of traffic, check your blind spot, and merge into a gap without stopping or forcing others to brake.
- You signal early and cancel it once you are settled in the lane.
Driving on the highway
- You hold a steady speed that suits the traffic and the limit, and keep a safe following distance at higher speed.
- You keep right except to pass and do not linger in other drivers' blind spots.
Lane changes and passing
- Before every move you check your mirrors and blind spot, signal in good time, and change one lane at a time.
- You pass only when it is legal and safe, and return to the right without cutting in.
Leaving the highway
- You move into the exit lane in good time, signal, and do your slowing down on the ramp rather than on the highway.
Turns, curves and busier roads
- You take the correct lane and position for turns and curves, and adjust your speed as the road gets tighter and busier.
- In business areas you watch for pedestrians, cyclists and traffic slowing or stopping ahead.
Intersections
- You observe controlled and uncontrolled intersections, obey signs, signals and markings, and stop in the right place.
- You yield right of way correctly and do not block the intersection or the crosswalk.
What ends the test on the spot
- A collision you could have prevented
- A dangerous action that puts someone at risk
- Breaking a traffic law, such as running a red light or a stop sign
The examiner marks each item as you drive and decides one thing at the end: whether you meet the Ministry's standard for a full licence. Small errors add up, and any one of the three actions above ends the test on the spot. No points threshold is published, so the goal is calm, confident highway driving with room to spare.

Note: DriveTest does not publish official figures for the marking scheme or automatic fail conditions. DriveTest states the examiner evaluates your skills against set criteria and completes a scoresheet, but does not publish the criteria or a pass threshold. You can request the scoresheet after the test.
05The things that catch people out
You have to declare your highway driving, and getting it wrong costs half your fee
Booking the G test requires declaring how often you have driven in the last three months on a road posted at 80 km/h or more, or on a 400-series highway. You need at least five such trips to qualify, and you must state their average length. DriveTest states that without the required highway experience your appointment is cancelled and you lose 50 per cent of the road test fee. The 400-series list includes the 400, 401, 402, 403, 404, 405, 406, 407, 409, 410, 416, 417, 420 and 427, the QEW, the Don Valley Parkway, the Gardiner Expressway, the E. C. Row Expressway and the Conestoga Parkway.
The G test is temporarily modified, and it depends which centre you book
DriveTest states that until further notice the G road test is modified at full-time centres and drops four elements already covered by the G2: parallel parking, roadside stops, the three-point turn, and driving in residential neighbourhoods. Part-time Travel Point locations continue to run the standard G test. Which centre you book therefore changes what you are asked to do, so check before you assume the shorter version applies to you.
