The Ontario G2 road test

The first of Ontario's two road tests. DriveTest calls it the city test: everyday street driving, no highway.

01The rule that decides your date

12 months of waiting, or 8 months with a course

Measured from the day you get your G1, not from when you start practising.
16 is the minimum age to apply for a G1, which is where the 12 months starts.
Requires an MTO-approved Beginner Driver Education course. DriveTest describes the same rule as a four-month reduction.
No practice hours to log. The wait is the requirement, not a number of hours behind the wheel.

03What the examiner marks

DriveTest does not publish its official marking sheet, so this is our plain-language guide to what a G2 examiner is watching, grouped the way the examination record groups it. Treat it as a study aid, not the official form. The examiner marks a scoresheet you can ask DriveTest for after the test.

Starting out

Before you move, you find, adjust and use your safety devices: seatbelt, mirrors and head restraint.
You check your mirrors and blind spot, signal, then pull away smoothly and under control.

Backing up and the turnabout

You reverse in a straight line and complete a turnabout, keeping the car in position and under control.
You look back over your shoulder while reversing rather than relying on the mirrors alone.

Driving along

You keep a safe following distance and do not pass or cut in too closely.
You choose the correct lane, hold your position in it, and do not straddle the markings.
Before every lane change you check your blind spot, signal in good time, and cancel the signal after.
You yield right of way correctly and take extra care at pedestrian crossovers, school crossings and for emergency vehicles.
You match your speed to the conditions, neither too fast nor so slow that you hold up traffic.

Intersections and railway crossings

You observe controlled and uncontrolled intersections properly and obey signs, signals and pavement markings.
You slow and stop in good time, in the right place, without blocking the crosswalk or the intersection.

Left and right turns

You signal at the right moment, get into the correct lane and position early, and finish the turn in the right lane.
You turn neither too wide nor too short, steer smoothly, and yield right of way as required.

Parking

You observe before and while you move, park in the correct position, and do not hit objects, other vehicles or the curb.
You signal before leaving the spot and keep the car under smooth control throughout.

Stopping and starting on a hill

You stop and park on a grade without rolling back, angle your wheels correctly and set the parking brake.
You pull away again smoothly, in the right gear, with the car under control.

What ends the test on the spot

A collision you could have prevented
A dangerous action that puts someone at risk
Breaking a traffic law, such as running a red light or a stop sign

The examiner marks each item as you drive and decides one thing at the end: whether you meet the Ministry's standard. Small errors add up, and any one of the three actions above ends the test on the spot. No points threshold is published, so the goal is simply steady, lawful, unremarkable driving.

Note: DriveTest does not publish official figures for the marking scheme or automatic fail conditions. DriveTest states the examiner evaluates your skills against set criteria and completes a scoresheet, but does not publish the criteria or a pass threshold. You can request the scoresheet after the test.

05The things that catch people out

Arrive 30 minutes early

DriveTest asks you to arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment and to check in inside the centre, usually at a self-serve kiosk, then wait in your vehicle. If no examiner reaches you within 30 minutes of your appointment time, go back inside to Counter A.

Apply your result within 12 months

A pass is not the end of it. If you do not go back inside and apply the result to upgrade your licence within 12 months, the result expires and you have to take the test again and pay again.
